Why I Treat Autonomic Dysfunction, I’ve Been There, Done That

hello. I’m Dr. Sangchul Hwang, an autonomic nervous system researcher and therapist.

Many people ask me this question.
“Why did you choose to focus your practice on autonomic nerves?”

The answer to this question actually starts with a very personal experience of mine.
It’s also a story I haven’t told my family in detail until now.

At the time, I was experiencing urine leakage with the slightest movement,
and a constant burning pain in my tongue.

The diagnoses were urinary incontinence and burning mouth.
But at the time, neither I nor anyone else around me really understood the symptoms.

It wasn’t until I experienced these symptoms myself that I realized that
I realized that ‘autonomic nerve therapy’ was at the center of all of this.

What is an autonomic nerve?

Autonomic nerve therapy plays an important role in addressing a wide range of symptoms and problems often experienced by modern people.

The autonomic nervous system is the nervous system that
without our conscious awareness.

There are two main types of nerves: sympathetic and parasympathetic,
The body needs a balance between these two nerves to stay healthy.

But you’re stressed out,
prolonged periods of tension, this balance is easily disrupted.

As a result, you may experience a variety of symptoms, including

  • Hyperhidrosis
  • oliguria
  • Insomnia
  • Tinnitus
  • Burning mouth sensation

“The tests at the university hospital showed no abnormalities…”

This is the most frustrating part for patients.

“They did all the tests at the university hospital.
and they say there’s nothing wrong.”

And yet, the symptoms continue.
You’re obviously uncomfortable, and your quality of life continues to suffer.

However, if you take a constitutional test at an oriental medicine clinic
it is very common to find a clear constitutional imbalance.

From a Chinese medicine perspective
autonomic nervous system is out of balance.

Different symptoms, but common constitutional traits

The conditions I treat are very diverse.
But surprisingly, there are commonalities in the constitution of my patients.

  • Tendency to get stressed easily
  • Always on edge
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Overall Sensitivity

This constitutional imbalance
unbalance the autonomic nervous system,
leading to a variety of conditions.

As your constitution recovers, so will your autonomic nervous system

I’m very clear in my clinical practice.

When your constitution normalizes,
the autonomic nervous system will rebalance
symptoms may be sufficiently improved.

How does Chinese medicine view the autonomic nervous system?

For example, just because your tongue hurts
treating the tongue alone will not necessarily improve the outcome.

So in Chinese medicine
whether it’s a sore tongue or excessive sweating.
it’s based on treating the whole body.

A classic example is the bladder meridian.
The bladder meridian runs from the pinky toe to the legs, waist, back, head, and eyes.

The action of this meridian is
much like the vagus nerve in Western medicine.

The vagus nerve is a parasympathetic nerve that plays a key role in
and plays a key role in autonomic regulation.

In Chinese medicine, the similar bladder meridian is used to
treats the brain, treats back pain,
and, as the name suggests, bladder function.

Scientifically Backed Chinese Medicine Autonomic Nerve Therapy

When certain acupuncture points are stimulated
in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans
scientists are actually seeing changes in brain response.

This shows that TCM autonomic nerve therapy
is not just an anecdotal experience
it’s a science-based treatment.

The key to autonomic therapy is ‘relaxation’

Dysautonomia patients have one thing in common
they have an overactive sympathetic nervous system.

So the most important thing for me in therapy is
is to get the body to relax.

  • Relax tense muscles and
  • Improve circulation and
  • Treatments to compensate for constitutional weaknesses

When these three things happen together
treatment response is often much faster.

Chinese Medicine Treatment Doesn’t Take as Long as You Think

Many people think
“Chinese medicine treatment takes a long time”.

However, with the right diagnosis and the right treatment, people can often improve
it’s very common for people to get better faster than you think.

Autonomic therapy is all about ‘constitution’

There’s something I always emphasize to my patients.

“Treatment begins when you know your constitution.”

Whether it’s the sympathetic or parasympathetic nerves
if you’ve become overly sensitive
there is an innate constitutional weakness at work.

When your constitution is righted
your autonomic nervous system will naturally recover.

After more than a decade of treating autonomic disorders, here’s what I have to say

I’ve met many patients who have suffered from symptoms
and depression for a long time.

But the fact that you can improve
that you can get better
that it’s possible to get better.

Don’t let your day get too depressing,
and with the right diagnosis and treatment
with the right diagnosis and treatment.

Autonomic nerves can and do recover.

I’ll listen, and we’ll listen together,
and together we will find a path to recovery.

Please feel free to leave a comment,
and if anyone else is struggling with the same symptoms
please share.

The road to recovery for body and mind,
and I’ll be there to help you get started.
