Compensatory Hyperhidrosis: If Sweating Has Become Worse After Surgery

Why does compensatory hyperhidrosis occur?
Compensatory hyperhidrosis refers to a condition in which, following surgery for hyperhidrosis, sweating in the hands or armpits decreases, but excessive sweating occurs instead in other areas, such as the back, chest, abdomen, and thighs.
Sweating in our bodies is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system, which is part of the autonomic nervous system.
Although the surgery reduces sweating by blocking sympathetic nerve transmission in a specific area, the body naturally tends to maintain overall balance, so sweating may increase in other areas.
Although the severity varies from person to person, some people experience excessive sweating that makes it difficult to carry out daily activities.
It’s not that my constitution has changed.
After surgery, I often get asked questions like this.
“I used to be very sensitive to the heat, but now I’m very sensitive to the cold.”
“I used to feel the cold a lot, but now I feel too hot.”
That’s why some people worry that their constitution might have changed completely.
We see things a little differently.
A person’s constitution does not suddenly change to that of someone else.
A Soyang type remains a Soyang type, and a Taeum type remains a Taeum type.

That is why some people feel the cold more intensely, while others feel as though they are running a fever.
The hardest part isn’t the sweat—it’s the anxiety.

Even before I step into the conference room, I worry that I might break out in a sweat, and I find myself reaching for dark-colored clothes instead of light-colored shirts.
Just having someone standing close to me in an elevator makes me nervous, and that nervousness leads to a vicious cycle where I start sweating even more.
Ultimately, some people find socializing burdensome and end up going out less often.
Therefore, compensatory hyperhidrosis should be understood not simply as a matter of sweat volume, but as a condition influenced by both the autonomic nervous system and emotional responses.
We look at the body’s reactions before we look at sweat.
Even in cases of compensatory hyperhidrosis, not all patients require the same treatment.
For some people, stress is the main cause, while for others, lack of sleep or fatigue can make the autonomic nervous system more sensitive.
For some people, a constitutional tendency toward heat can also worsen their symptoms.
