PGAD Self-Checklist
What if your body reacts even when you’re not thinking about anything?
Even without sexual thoughts or stimulation, do you repeatedly experience unusual sensationsaround your genitals, such as arousal, tingling, a vibrating sensation, or a fluttering feeling?
At first, many people struggle with this on their own because they don’t know how to describe these symptoms.
PGAD stands for Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder. In Korean, it’s called “Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder.”
Recently, the term PGAD/GPD (Genito-Pelvic Dysesthesia)has been used, which examines not only arousal but also a variety of genital and pelvic sensations, such as tingling, vibrations, burning, and pain.
Even without any specific sexual stimulation or desire, you repeatedly experience a sensation as if your body were aroused.
This sensation is sometimes described as a tingling, vibrating, fluttering, or pulsating feeling.
In addition to arousal, you may also experience numbness, a burning sensation, a feeling of pressure, or pain.
Check to see if these unwanted sensations occur repeatedly, regardless of your sexual desire.
Even if the sensation changes temporarily, it may not disappear completely or may recur.
It is also important to check whether symptoms vary depending on specific postures or pressure on the perineum.
Check to see if you experience lower back or buttock pain, or discomfort in the pelvis or perineum.
Also check to see if discomfort related to urination accompanies the genital sensations.
While stress and anxiety can affect symptoms, this does not mean that PGAD is merely a psychological problem.
Try to assess the extent to which these sensations affect your daily life—such as sleep, work, going out, and exercise.
PGAD is different from simply “having a high sex drive.”
Because of this, some people are unable to discuss their symptoms and end up worrying about them alone.
However, PGAD is not the same as having a high sex drive.
Even when you have no sexual thoughts or desires in your mind, unwanted physical sensations may recur.
Therefore, rather than simply focusing on the term “arousal,” it’s important to carefully identify which sensations—such as tingling, vibrations, pulsing, burning, pressure, or pain — are occurring in which areas of the body.
There is no single cause of PGAD.
Just because someone has PGAD symptoms does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the pudendal nerve, nor should it be automatically assumed that stress is the cause.
Depending on the symptoms, it is necessary to examine not only the genital area but also the pelvis and perineum, nerve pathways, areas related to the lower back and spine, as well as overall physical health and psychosocial factors.
We understand that these symptoms can be difficult to discuss
PGAD symptoms are not easy to explain to others. Even in the clinic, some patients are unsure how to describe their symptoms and end up omitting important details.
It’s okay if you can’t explain everything clearly right from the start.
We can go through them one by one, starting with the sensation that is currently causing you the most discomfort, when the symptoms began, how they change depending on your posture, lower back and pelvic symptoms, urinary symptoms, sleep and stress, and any medications you are taking or have stopped taking.
If you’ve been struggling with sensations that are hard to describe for a long time, start by carefully reviewing the symptoms you’re experiencing now.
※ This checklist is a reference tool to help you self-assess the nature of your current symptoms. The number of items checked alone cannot be used to diagnose PGAD/GPD or determine the likelihood or severity of the condition, and it is not a substitute for a diagnosis by a healthcare professional.
