My mouth is burning,
and my tongue is burning.
Have you ever been told over and over again that “the scan is clean”?
I look fine on the outside.
but the pain continues day after day,
and no one can tell you what’s causing it.
The frustration patients feel is much greater than they realize.
hello.
I’m Dr. Sangchul Hwang, an autonomic nervous system researcher and therapist.
Tests show no abnormalities, but pain is definitely present
Most people with a burning mouth
have already been seen at multiple hospitals.
MRIs, CTs, blood tests,
and Sjogren’s syndrome tests.
and the results are always the same.
“Nothing out of the ordinary.”
You’re taking medication, you’re taking nutritional supplements.
symptoms remain the same,
and some people are deeply hurt
“just suck it up and get on with it,” and some people are deeply hurt.
But the fact that the pain exists at all is already an ‘abnormality’.
Secondary symptoms that may occur if the burning mouth sensation lasts longer
It may start out as a simple tongue tingle or burning.
but if left untreated, many people develop secondary symptoms, including
- Reduced appetite due to food discomfort
- Pain-induced tossing and turning
- Social withdrawal, where going out becomes a burden
- Feelings of irritability, anxiety, or depression
Patients often ask themselves, “Am I sensitive?” especially if they have repeated episodes of “tests are normal, but I’m still sick.
patients often askthemselves, “Am I just sensitive?
However, burning mouth
👉 is a symptom of an actual malfunction of the nervous system, not the personality of the patient.
This must be understood separately.

What is a burning mouth sensation?
Burning mouth sensation
is a persistent burning, hot, tingling, painful sensation in the tongue, mouth, gums, and roof of the mouth
burning, tingling, pain, or strange sensationsthat persist.
The problem is
👉 is that there is very little visible inflammation or wounding.
- The tip of my tongue is burning
- uncomfortable when speaking or chewing, and
- You may also experience strange sensations such as bitter or metallic tastes.
- It’s also characterized by pain that’s worse at night or when you’re tense.

Different from Sjogren’s syndrome
Because of similar symptoms
burning mouth is often mistaken for Sjogren’s syndrome because of the similarities.
However, Sjogren’s syndrome is a
- autoimmune disease and
- systemic symptoms such as joint pain and extreme fatigue.
- Autoantibodies are often identified in blood tests.
Burning mouth, on the other hand
is that it is often normal on examination, but the pain persists.

Painkillers-Ribotril doesn’t ‘fix the root cause’
Some patients take
ribotril or neuroleptics to temporarily relieve the pain
or neuroleptics to temporarily relieve the pain.
However, this method uses the
- Drowsiness
- Lethargy
- Difficulty concentrating
and other side effects,
and are not a long-term solution.
Burning Mouth
The “why” is much more important than the symptom itself.
Two common causes of burning mouth
Clinically, the most common causes are of the following two types
✅ 1. Stress and autonomic overactivity
Often accompanied by irritability, anxiety, insomnia, indigestion, and cold hands and feet.
The autonomic nervous system becomes overactive
The tongue and oral mucosa become hypersensitive to small stimuli.
✅ 2. Occurred after dental treatment
After Endodontics, Implants, and Wisdom Teeth Extraction
It’s not uncommon for people to start experiencing symptoms.
Anesthesia, keeping the mouth open, jaw joint tension,
and localized nerve compression
sensory nerves in the tongue.

More important than the tongue is the ‘head nerve’
A lot of people ask me this question.
“My tongue hurts, shouldn’t I treat my tongue?”
But
the nerves that control the sensation and movement of the tongue all start in the head.
So I decided
rather than just treating the tongue topically
- Crown
- Temporal
- Jaw
- nerve flow throughout the head
throughout the head.
As this nerve flow is released
the pain in the tongue is very often reduced.

Posture and neck and shoulder tension are not forgotten
Many people with burning mouth are not aware that the
- Tortoiseshell
- Straight wood
- Trapezius muscle overstrain
state at the same time.
Tension in this area can
interferes with nerve circulation to the head and tongue
and prolong the pain.
Look in the mirror now
if your neck is hanging forward,
and whether your shoulders are always tense
if your shoulders are always tense.

If you’re one of these people, it’s time to get a proper diagnosis
If several of the following apply to you
It’s definitely worth checking out the possibility of a burning mouth sensation.
- My tongue is unusually hot and burning.
- My mouth is sore and uncomfortable, but the tests say it’s normal.
- Symptoms are worse at night or when you’re nervous
- My symptoms started after dental work
- My shoulders, neck, and jaw are always stiff and tight
- I’m stressed and can’t sleep well
If three or more of these apply to you
it’s not just a simple mouth infection or temporary pain
neurogenic burning mouth and not just a sore throat.

Wrapping up
“There’s no cause.”
“You just have to live with it.”
I’ve seen so many people come to us
I’ve seen so many people come in hurting.
But a burning mouth
definitely has a cause and
can be improved by correcting the cause.
Relaxes the nerves,
and restore balance to the body,
and taking a constitutional approach
the pain can be relieved.
Time to find the cause is more important than time to endure the pain
Many of our burning mouth patients come to us after months or years of
come to us after months or years of tolerating it.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
When I hear these words
I realize how hard it’s been to get through this time.
But a burning mouth is not
👉 It’s not a pain that you can tolerate and get used to.
it’s more like ‘the more you tolerate it, the more sensitive your nerves become’.
When it hurts a little less,
before the memory of the pain is too deeply imprinted.
The outcome is much more favorable if the cause is corrected.
